The SA Heritage Resource Agency is expected to grant a = three- to five-year excavating permit to Kathleen Kuman, of the = University of the Witwatersrand's archaeology department, who lectures = in Stone Age archaeology. Kuman said on Friday: "I hope the excavations will = delay the mining as these sites need to be investigated. In terms of law = every archeological site needs to be investigated. This particular site = is important because it is so rare." The Sangoan artefacts could be dated back to about 300 = 000 years ago. Kuman is excavating a Sangoan site in Limpopo. Other = Sangoan sites have been discovered in central and east Africa. The Sangoan period is a transitional period between = the earlier and middle Stone Ages when a new modern people began to = inhabit challenging environments, Kuman said. The surface find on the Wild Coast includes stone = artefacts and fossil antelope teeth, which is potentially very = significant. Animal bones could provide information on the climate = during this period and therefore the conditions in which the Sangoan = people lived, as well as help to date the site. The exact location of the find is not being disclosed = for fear that the site may be plundered, but it is in the same area as = the proposed mining. Archaeologist Chrissie Sievers said: "Archaeologists = try to compromise because we realise development is important. Durban - A significant archeological = find on=20 Transkei's Wild Coast may delay, if not halt, the = proposed=20 mining in the area by Australian company Mineral=20 Commodities.

The SA Heritage Resource Agency is = expected to grant a three- to five-year excavating = permit to=20 Kathleen Kuman, of the University of the = Witwatersrand's=20 archaeology department, who lectures in Stone Age=20 archaeology.

Kuman said on Friday: "I hope the=20 excavations will delay the mining as these sites need = to be=20 investigated. In terms of law every archeological site = needs=20 to be investigated. This particular site is important = because=20 it is so rare."
